Betting On Horse Racing

There are very few days of the year when there is no horse racing somewhere in Australia. Racing can be a very lucrative sport to bet on for those who are willing to study the vast amount of form that is available.

Weekly Race Meets

Every week throughout Australia there are hundreds of horse races to bet on. Races are held at bush outback tracks, country towns and in major metropolitan areas. There is usually more form information available on horses that race on major tracks because as well as weight , jockey and margin information you can usually find their sectional times and stewards comments for past races. It is best to avoid maiden races (races for horses that have not won before) unless you have inside knowledge, as you have limited information to base your selection on. -> Today’s Horse Racing Odds

Group Races

The highest level of thoroughbred races in Australia are designated as Group races or “black type” races. These important races are divided into 4 categories – Group 1, Group 2, Group 3 and Listed races. The highest level and most recognised races are the Group 1 races which carry at least $250,000 in prizemoney. Races like the Melbourne Cup, Golden Slipper, Caulfield Cup and Cox Plate are all Group 1 races. There are over 60 Group 1 races each year and a full list of Group 1 races is available. There is plenty of form available on Group races, which means they are good races to bet on.

Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup is the most famous race in Australia and is frequently referred to as “the race that stops a nation”. Even people who don’t normally bet will have a once-a-year flutter on this race and as the first Tuesday in November draws near there is an almost endless supply of information on the runners, their owners, jockeys and everything else. With a field of 24 horse including horses from all over the world it is also a difficult race to bet on as it is hard to line form up, particularly for horses that have never run in Australia. Despite this, this is a race everyone should have at least a small bet on as it increases the excitement and anticipation of the race. Check out the latest -> 2012 Melbourne Cup Odds

Caulfield Cup

The Caulfield Cup is one of the world’s great 2400 metre handicap races and is one of the feature Group 1 events on the Spring Racing carnival. The Caulfield Cup is typically run on the third Saturday in October with the field containing some of Australia’s top stayers as well as international runners all lured in by the huge prizemoney on offer.  Check out the latest -> 2012 Caulfield Cup Odds

Cox Plate

Regarded as Australia’s premier weight for age horse race, the Cox Plate has featured many of the best horses to have ever raced in Australia. The Cox Plate takes place during the Melbourne Spring Racing Carnival and is held at the Moonee Valley Racecourse. Considered now as Australasia’s most prestigious race, the Cox Plate is also part of the World Series Racing Championship which features thirteen races in eleven countries all over the world. Horse Racing Betting / Types Of Bets

Once you select a horse you can bet it to win, place or each-way. Backing a horse to win, also known as betting on the nose, means your selection has to finish first for you to collect. Place betting means a collect
if it runs first, second or third (provided there are at least 8 runners), and each-way means you are betting on win and place.

There are plenty of other bet types such as quinella (first two horses home), trifecta (first 3 home in correct order), daily doubles (winners of 2 specified races) and pick 4. You can also bet on things besides the actual horses such as who will win the jockeys premiership or the trainers premiership. You can bet on overseas races as well as Australian races and you can find bookmakers that offer fixed odds, starting prices or fluctuating odds.
